Краткая история
создания организации. In 1961, two Londoners and an
Irishman co-signed an article in the London Observer untitled "Forgotten
prisoners", on Angolan Agostinho Neto and Romanian philosopher Constentin Noica.
This was the launch of a campaign called "Appeal for Amnesty 1961" which
grew enormously, spread to other countries, and at the end of 1961, brought about the
organization Amnesty International.

The "Appeal for Amnesty" called for the release of all people imprisoned because
of politics, race, religion, color, national origin or the expression of their beliefs.
Amnesty was founded on the principle that people have fundamental rights that transcend
national, cultural, religious, and ideological boundaries. It worked to obtain prompt and
fair trials for all prisoners, to end torture and executions, and to secure the release of
prisoners of conscience. Amnesty International's Mandate was based on the United Nations
Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in 1977, it was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
for its work.

now counts on more than 1.100.000 volunteers in 150 countries who write letters to
governments that are abusing human rights through imprisonment, harassment, threats,
physical mistreatment, torture, "disappearances" or politically motivated
murder. They staff tables at public events, passing out information to the public on
prisoners of conscience and human rights issues. They organize demonstrations, write press
releases, found letter writing groups at their churches or synagogues, etc.
